October 2017 snowfall was strongest in the higher elevations of western Canada and the northrn Rockies with some lesser amounts in Colorado. There is sufficient snow plus more expected at Grand Targhee to make it quite likely to be in full operation by December.
California: The Sierra had a minor storm in September but almost none in October. However a foot or more
of snow is expected this weekend over 8,000 feet.
Pacific Northwest: The region had some October storms but the rain/snow line was above most of the ski areas.
Cams show widespread snow cover in the Whistler alpine. Mt. Bachelor had 39 inches snowfall and has a 9-11 inch base.
Canadian Rockies and Interior B.C.: Snowfall has been more widespread in this region with an additional storm hitting now.
October snowfall and base depths: Big White (17 inches, 11 inches), Red Mt. (14, no base reported), Whitewater (26, 24),
Revelstoke (61, 22), Kicking Horse (51, 30), Fernie (24, 14). Cams show some snowpack at Lake Louise also.
U. S. Northern Rockies: Grand Targhee had 45 inches October snowfall and has a 40 inch base with anopther foot of snow
likely over the weekend. Mid-mountain Jackson Hole had 35 inches snowfall and has a 25 inch base. Schweitzer had 5 inches snowfall.
Utah: Utah had minimal October snow but is expecting snow this weekend.
Northern and Central Colorado: A-Basin opened a run on snowmaking October 13 followoed by Loveland on October 20. Loveland's
natural snowfall has been 32 inches but that is not affecting any terrain openings yet.
Southern and Western Colorado: This region has been drier than those farther north. The Rocky Mountain Biological Lab at Gothic
(between Crested Butte and Aspen) has had 17 inches season snowfall, about one half of normal. Crested Butte has had 10 inches.
Northeast: Killington and Sunday River have made some snow, but there has been too much warm weather and rain for anyone to open yet.
