2023-24 Ski Season Summary

The following major weather patterns affected the 2022-23 ski season.
Late October through November: This was the driest November since 2007. Regions with snow mostly had some rain mix as well. Late October snowfall in northern regions mostly melted out.
First week of December: A storm track in northern regions brought moderate snow at higher elevations but considerable rain lower down.
Last 3 weeks of December: Snowfall was less than half normal in all regions, resulting in the second driest (to 1976) November + December on record.
First week of January: A moderate storm hit the the Sierra.
Second week of January: The first major series of storms of the season hit the Northwest, Utah and Colorado.
Second half of January: Overall snowfall was close to normal but the Northwest and much of British Columbia had heavy rain late in the month.
First week of February: Major storms hit California, Utah and the Southwest.
The rest of February: Snowfall was average in northern regions but below average farther south.
First half of March: All regions had above average snowfall, bringing the season-to-date to a high point of 96%.
Second half of March: Snowfall was above average in southern regions but below average farther north.
April: Snowfall was below average except for northern and central Colorado.
The rest of spring A week into May it snowed 2+ feet in the northern sections of the Sierra, Utah and Colorado.

Despite the slow start 2023-24 US skier visits remained strong at 60+ million, about equal to the historical records from the outstanding 2007-08 and 2010-11 seasons. 2023-24 was a moderate El Nino season, and when the snow finally came it was overall slightly stronger in the southern than northern regions. See 2023-24 Ski Season Analysis.
