What a bizarre day after last Monday's powderfest. Yesterday's storm snowed 3-5 inches at 7000+ ft., but ended with rain and froze overnight. The sheltered runs which had great powder on Monday had an ice glaze in the morning and almost all of them were closed. The south facing runs which are usually Baldy's least reliable softened to excellent corn from about noon to 2PM. Spring Ridge and Holcumac were particularly outstanding.
As great terrain as Baldy has, I am compelled to critique management. The recorded message this morning said they would open at 7:30AM with all facilities. They started selling tickets at 8:45, we got on the mountain at 9:30, over an hour after we arrived, and Ch. 4 opened at 11:30. You still have to ski Mullin's Mile to get back to the Notch from Thunder. A beginner snowboarder fell off Mullins into the ice, and the trail was blocked while a snowmobile came up for the rescue. Ch. 2 broke on February 7. When they have the most snow since 1993 and President's Weekend is coming up, you would think they would take WHATEVER MEASURES ARE NECESSARY to get that chair fixed promptly. On Monday they said it would be ready last Friday.
