First day after exceptional Jan. 1-2 rain storm to the TOP OF MAMMOTH. Snow level dropped Thursday afternoon, leaving 4-6 inches of thick powder over the rain saturated base. At 10:30AM, with high winds and crowds building due to slow opening of lifts, we bugged out of Mammoth and drove to June for the afternoon. The face of June was trashed by the rain, and there was a creek between their lodge and chairs J2 and J6, but the runs were in decent shape with some hardpack areas but nothing really icy. The tree skiing was fun, but I did have new Volant Chubbs to handle the dense powder. In the steeper areas near the top of J3, I would generally hit bottom (which was a hard crust) when finishing turns in the new snow.
