I only have basic notes about this day, but I remember how and why it happened. Work obligations kept me home all of Adam's spring break week of his 11-year-old season. I thought I might get at least Thursday/Friday off but that didn't happen. Furthermore Sunday was Easter and his mother wanted us home. Thus I drove Friday, staying one night to ski Saturday and we were both determined to make the most of it.
Fortunately the weather cooperated. It was quite warm with no wind. The snow was still packed powder on the top runs and steeper sections of chairs 3,5 and 22 as it had snowed 8 inches four days earlier. There were good spring conditions in the Main Lodge area. They were salting the groomers in the lower and more east facing Canyon/Eagle sectors.
We skied bell-to-bell: 8:00AM-4:15PM with no lunch. With only chairs 1 and 16 being high speed back then, Mammoth opened earlier than now and closed later in order to accomodate weekend crowds. We timed an early groomed Cornice run at 2 minutes 4 seconds. Noteworthy morning runs were on Hangman's, Dave's, chair 9, Avalanche 1, Viva, Avalanche 2, Drop Out, MJB, Heuvos Grande and Chair 5. In the afternoon we hit chair 14, Scotty's, Wipe Out, Hump, Paranoid 1, and Climax. After the top closed we finished the day with 3 runs on Bowling Alley, which was in the early stages of becoming the Unbound Terrain Park.
We skied 43,000 vertical feet, finally breaking my record from 1984 before Adam was born. Occasionally among adult skiers, the topic of
"skiing your age" in vertical arises. This was a near miss for me, as I had turned 43 four months earlier. I've only done it 4 times:
29,900 vertical at Snowbird on March 10, 1981, 1.06x my age
31,600 vertical at Mammoth on May 1, 1982, 1.07x my age
30,500 vertical at Mammoth on April 9, 1983, 1.01x my age
37,600 vertical at Mammoth on March 2, 1984, 1.20x my age
Of course skiing multiples of your age is routine when you start skiing at age 3 as Adam did and become advanced by age 7. Nonetheless
this day became and remains his record multiple of vertical feet to age:
18,000 vertical at Mammoth on February 19, 1990, 3.48x his age in 5-year-old season
27,600 vertical at Mammoth on April 11, 1992, 3.77x his age in 7-year-old season
43,000 vertical at Mammoth on April 6, 1996, 3.80x his age in 11-year-old season
There were 4 other days above 3x his age in that 7-year-old season plus one each in the 6, 8 and 9-year-old seasons.
